The Kooks – ‘Always Where I Need To Be’
|
![]()
Anyone who’s seen The Kooks being savaged by Simon Amstell will know they don’t generally do themselves any favours when it comes to being taken seriously. Luke Pritchard and his chums seem desperate to be seen as credible, and in a rather grumpy way too. This is an odd strategy when you consider that this first taste of second album Konk is a jaunty, gently ramshackle indie-pop song that sounds like it was tossed off in the couple of minutes it lasts. There’s no problem with that: radio will love it and the kids will be happy too. But why pretend to be something you’re not?

Metronomy – ‘My Heart Rate Rapid’
|
![]()
Joseph Mount is the Brighton-based electro wonk behind Metronomy. Although he already has an album under his belt, his upcoming second effort Nights Out just might be the one to see him cross over in the kind of way Justice really should’ve done last year. At first this bleepy, falsetto-driven romp makes you feel a bit sick, as you’d imagine with that title – but the retro ‘80s popcraft soon makes you think of Hot Chip, and even a bit of early Sparks and Devo as much as the latest tuneless electro twaddle.
